What Tyro’s Open Banking participation means for you
Experienced retail businesswoman Catherine Harris joined the Tyro Board as an independent non-executive director. Catherine is a highly accomplished director with extensive retail experience as Chair of Australia’s largest independent produce retailer, Harris Farm Markets Pty Ltd.
Harris Farm Markets was established in 1971 by David Harris with a single shop in Villawood NSW. It was the first Australian fruit and vegetable company to open in a supermarket style operation. Harris Farm Markets has become a household name for Australian families looking for stock fruit and vegetables, cheeses, deli items, and gourmet groceries.
Catherine re-joined the company in 1999 to undertake a major restructure and corporatisation of the family owned company. Today Harris Farm has become the most successful privately owned fresh food retailer recently written up as one of “the world wide top 50 retailers to watch”.
Catherine is an Officer in the Order of Australia and was awarded the Australian Public Service Medal, The Centenary Medal and has an Honorary Doctorate in Business from UNSW. She is also a Commissioner of the Australian Rugby League and Director of UNSW School of Business Council, Governor of the University of Notre Dame and the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
Tyro Chairman Kerry Roxburgh welcomed Catherine’s appointment, saying she would bring new skills and perspectives to the Board. “Catherine Harris is one of Australia’s most astute business figures, who will bring enormous insight into the dynamics that drive a successful retail business,” Mr Roxburgh said. “Tyro has ambitious growth plans to be the natural home for Australia’s 2.1 million small and medium sized businesses, and Catherine Harris will help drive that strategic oversight.”
Catherine herself described her decision as “I found everything about Tyro exciting, the concept and technology, the people involved, the potential of a new form of banking that talks directly to their customers.”
I am very excited to have such a luminary business woman contribute her talents and experience to our endeavour. The best voice for our merchants that I could have imagined. And she knows better than anyone what it takes to compete against dominant players, here the two big retailers.
