UX Researcher

About the role:

As UX Researcher for Tyro’s banking & payments products, you will report to one of the Product Leads, and be responsible for helping set the direction of new products that Tyro works on.

You’ll work as part of Tyro’s user-centred product development team to identify and answer some of the most difficult questions Tyro has about its customers, revealing what their needs are, and how we address these needs better than our competitors.

You could be working in one of Tyro’s core banking products: Deposits, Payments or Lending, and amongst incredibly smart designers, product managers, engineers and testers. While you’re working with us, you’ll help us understand our customers in incredible depth so we can build great products.

Key responsibilities:

  • Working closely with product managers, product designers and other researchers to develop research plans to understand business objectives
  • Ensuring the product team pick the right research methods and ask the right research questions when thinking about which features to develop, and what not to develop
  • Conducting both on-site, contextual and remote research studies with both Tyro and non-Tyro customers
  • Working with our engineering and data science team to integrate quantitative data with qualitative methods to deliver further insight into product decisions
  • Sharing findings with your immediate team, as well as the wider Tyro community and evangelising design research through the company
  • Assist with pilot studies of beta features and providing insights into customer expectations, leading to recommendations to the product team for next steps and possible iterations
  • Working with 3rd party vendors from time to time to organize participant testing sessions
  • Recommending and teaching best practice UX research amongst the product team, the designers and the whole company
  • Facilitating cross-collaborative workshops to tease out innovative solutions to customer problems


  • Minimum 5+ years experience with user experience research, including qualitative and quantitative methods
  • Can communicate well and adapt to lots of change and some ambiguity in projects
  • Able to manage multiple projects at the same time, and manage the challenges and logistics of recruiting for research purposes
  • Experience using various research methods for different types of research and how they apply to different projects
  • Self motivated, confident and able to present to large groups of people, and speak up when needed!

Nice to have:

  • Experience with banking products
  • A background in psychology, human factors or anthropology
  • Has worked in a start-up (or an agile organisation), and familiar with Lean product management techniques
