Jaycar’s Payments Partner for Enterprise Scale
Jaycar’s partnership with Tyro shows how the right payments provider can help enterprise retailers grow, manage payment costs, and create more connected customer experiences across online and in-store channels.
The Business
Jaycar Electronics Group is a family-run retailer that has expanded from a single store in the 1980s to more than 200 locations across Australia and New Zealand.
Operating at this scale means payments are not just a checkout function. They are a critical part of day-to-day operations, customer experience, and business performance across both physical stores and ecommerce.
Through its long-standing partnership with Tyro, Jaycar has been able to support fast, reliable payments, help reduce merchant fee costs, and strengthen the connection between its online and in-store retail experiences.
The Challenge
For a retailer processing more than 100 million transactions each year, reliability is essential. Any disruption has the potential to affect operations at scale.
Jaycar needed a payments partner that could help reduce reliance on legacy, on-premise infrastructure while supporting fast transaction processing and competitive pricing.
At the same time, the business was continuing to evolve its retail technology across online and in-store channels. This created demand for payment solutions that could better support a connected retail experience and the needs of a growing enterprise business.
The Tyro Solution: Payments Designed to Support Scale
Over time, the partnership has supported several initiatives across the business:
Cloud-first Payments Technology
Tyro’s approach helped Jaycar move away from a more traditional payments environment that relied on multiple pieces of on-site equipment. This supported a more flexible operating model and gave Jaycar a payments foundation better suited to the needs of a large, multi-location retailer.
Fast and Reliable Transaction Processing
At Jaycar transaction volumes, speed and uptime matter. As Graeme Faulkner, CTO at Jaycar Electronics Group, said, Tyro’s payment switches were “lightning fast” and “way faster than the incumbents in the marketplace.”
This has support smoother checkout experiences for both customers and staff, while also giving the business confidence in its ability to process payments at scale.
Lower Payment Costs through Least Cost Routing
One of the most significant areas of impact came through Jaycar’s work with Tyro on Tap & Save, Tyro’s version of least cost routing. In the early days of tap to pay, some digital wallet transactions were routed through the more expensive card option by default.
By routing eligible transactions through the lowest-cost available network, Jaycar was able to reduce merchant fee costs. “Tyro were able to save us hundreds of thousands of dollars in merchant fees annually,” Graeme says.
Connected Online and In-store Experiences
As Jaycar continued evolving its retail technology, payments became an important part of connecting ecommerce and in-store service. Graeme describes this integrated payments solution as “a fusion between our e-comm and our in-store offer, bringing both into a single platform.”
This allows customers to move more easily between channels, whether that means buying online and returning in store, saving a cart online and completing the purchase in store, or using an online wish list to help guide service on the shop floor.
Tyro worked alongside Jaycar and other digital partners to help support this broader retail experience.
Innovation Shaped by Business Needs
Graeme also points to Tyro’s Round Up functionality as an example of collaborative product development. “The Round Up feature is another example of Tyro listening to us and then bringing technology to market to support what we were trying to achieve,” he says.
The feature prompts customers at checkout to round their purchase up to the nearest dollar, with the difference donated to charity. “Already we’ve raised over $250,000 for the Starlight Foundation,” Graeme says.
The Result: Payments That Support Enterprise Retail Growth
For Jaycar, payments are more than a back-end function. They are an important part of how the business serves customers, manages costs, and connects channels across the retail journey.
Through its partnership with Tyro, Jaycar has been able to support reliable, fast payments at scale, reduce merchant fee costs, and contribute to a more integrated retail experience.
As Graeme says, “Over the years we’ve been together, we’ve done a number of things that have helped drive Jaycar’s business forward.”
Looking Ahead
As retail continues to evolve, Jaycar remains focused on bringing online and in-store experiences closer together.
With payments acting as an important connective layer across that journey, Tyro continues to support Jaycar as it adapts to changing customer expectations and explores new opportunities in retail technology.
