How these Tyro customers diversified and thrived in 2020

tyro-customer-success-story

In the customer base at Tyro alone, we’ve seen bold displays of tenacity in the face of adversity. As we reach the end of 2020, we’d like to revisit these customers and their stories of creativity and resilience.

Impressive Dumplings in Brisbane’s Sunnybank Hills

Sales dropped dramatically once the pandemic hit, and the Founder and Chef of Impressive Dumplings, Jay Li, was forced to close the doors to dine-in customers. Like so many others across Australia.
But that didn’t stop him.

Within the first week of the shutdown, Jay launched a survival plan, including online orders for deliveries and a points rewards system for hungry repeat customers.

With no clear end in sight to business restrictions and a looming March 2020 deadline on his second site opening, Jay switched tactics again. This time with online ordering and drive-through order service.

Pentagon Group in Tasmania

Pentagon Group manages three popular hotels in Tasmania that offer a range of hospitality services including watering holes, tasty pub and restaurant fare, and accommodation.

With the pandemic, public reservations were strictly off-limits. But that didn’t stop them from kicking into gear at pace and creating a targeted marketing strategy for an entirely new audience.
And it worked.

They scrapped Pentagon’s general advertising spend and sharpened the message to appeal strictly to businesses employing essential workers designated to work in the local area.
One such group was firefighters.

It was Pentagon, among others, who provided accommodation for firefighters with the Tasmania Fire Service and Forestry Tasmania staff during autumn’s back burning efforts. After the devastating bushfires earlier in 2020, it was all hands on deck.

Wellers Hill Medical Centre in Brisbane’s South

A respected family practice in Queensland’s Tarragindi area for 59 years, the team at Wellers Hill Medical Centre set up phone consults early on in the pandemic to meet patient needs.

Not only could patients get the help they needed from a distance; the new telehealth arrangements meant doctors could work remotely while providing uninterrupted service to patients.

At the practice itself, the other required shift was visitor and staff safety:

• Sectioning-off of certain areas of the building
• Creation of dedicated entry and exit points for its respiratory clinic
• Installation of perspex screens at reception
• Provision of masks and gloves
• Cleaning of rooms after every patient

Wholegreen Bakery now across NSW

In the gluten-free community, Wholegreen Bakery in Sydney’s Waverley is synonymous with hard-to-find goodness – croissants, pies, bread baked in 5 different varieties and more.

But as owner Cherie Lyden told us:

“We had just opened our second store, a café, in the CBD. We’d been open for two weeks, and then COVID. All of a sudden, the CBD went dead.”

The business shut its doors and consolidated back at Waverley.

Keeping jobs was the aim of Cherie, whose tightknit crew is united by a love of great (gluten-free) food.  “We basically had to pivot in order for the business to survive, and to keep the staff employed.”

And pivot they did at a lightning pace. Wholegreen Bakery got the website ready within a week to accept online orders and payments from customers with Tyro.

As Cherie tells it, they’ve seen an “absolute” increase in customer traffic both in Waverley and beyond. They’ve gone from an eastern suburbs of Sydney local to a fully-fledged state-wide business.

“We deliver all over New South Wales. It’s become a huge part of our revenue.”

We’d like to congratulate each one of these businesses for their resilience in keeping their locations operating and their dedication to the safety of their customers.
